Pac-Man is one of the most iconic video game characters of all time. The idea for the character came from the Japanese company Namco and was released in 1980 as an arcade game. Created by Toru Iwatani, Pac-Man is a yellow circle with large eyes that goes around eating dots while avoiding ghosts. Players score points by eating all the dots, while each ghost that is eaten earns the player one point. The original arcade game has been recreated many times over and there are now over 300 million copies of it sold worldwide.

How did Pacman become so popular?
30 years ago, a little yellow guy took over the world. Known as Pac-Man, this mouth-watering character with an insatiable appetite for dots and ghostly adversaries was introduced by Namco in 1980. From then on, the game that has been dubbed the most successful coin-operated arcade machine of all time became a worldwide phenomenon. In honor of the momentous occasion, we take a look back at some important milestones in Pac-Man’s history over the past three decades.
In 1980, Namco released its first game featuring Pacman. For those who don’t know, Pac-Man is a yellow sphere with large round eyes that travels through a maze while munching on pellets and avoiding ghosts. Based on Japanese mythology involving a creature called Pacu that was said to devour everything in its path, it wasn’t until a year later when some friends at Midway decided to change his name to Puck Man due to copyright issues.
In order to avoid confusion between names, people playing outside Japan simply referred to him as Pac-Man, which stuck and became his official moniker. Ever since then, his popularity has skyrocketed and he’s been featured in more than 20 games since then.
