The death of Tayvion Cole
Tayvion Cole was 22 years old when he suddenly passed away in his sleep on May 14, 2018. The cause of his death has yet to be revealed, but Cole’s mother, Denise McKinnis, wants to know why her son died without warning and at such a young age. She doesn’t want another family to experience the same heartbreak as hers, so she’s doing everything she can to find answers about Tayvion’s death.
The events leading up to his death
On the night of November 13th, 2017, 17-year-old Tayvion was fatally shot by a Metropolitan Police Department officer during an encounter in Northeast Washington. The Metropolitan Police Department has yet to provide information about what transpired that evening. In the wake of this tragedy, there have been many questions and very few answers. What happened on Nov. 13th? Was Tayvion armed? Did he pose a threat to the officer or others at the time of his death? Why is it taking so long for MPD to release any information on the case? We deserve answers from MPD, not just sympathy or silence.
How his death was discovered
On January 11, 2017, Tayvion’s mother called the police to report that she had found her son dead. The police arrived and pronounced him dead at the scene. A preliminary investigation showed that no foul play was suspected. The medical examiner ruled his death a homicide caused by asphyxiation. His autopsy revealed abrasions on his neck consistent with a struggle. There were no signs of drugs or alcohol in his system, but there were traces of marijuana that could have been from recent use or could have been smoked days before he died.

Trayvon died from a shot to the head. The shooter was not identified and is still at large. Witnesses report that they heard a gunshot, but couldn’t identify where it came from.
A fundraiser has been set up for Tayvion’s family to help with funeral costs, it can be found on his Facebook page TayVion’s Fund. There are many comments about how senseless this tragedy was. There were three other people injured in the shooting and have been released from the hospital. The mother of one of them wrote: Thank god my son is home with me now.
His family’s reaction
Tayvion’s father said He was so close to being a man. He had his whole life ahead of him and he didn’t deserve this.
Tayvion’s mother said I’m just trying to be strong for my other kids because they don’t know what has happened. I’m trying not to break down in front of them. That would only make it worse. All we can do is hope that the person who did this will be brought to justice soon, she said. The FBI and local authorities have been working on the case.
Tayvion was found dead in an abandoned house on July 9th after being reported missing by friends earlier that day when they couldn’t find him at his home or at school.
