The Internet is Screaming for an Obi-Wan Kenobi Movie
For years, the Star Wars fandom has been asking for an Obi-Wan Kenobi spinoff movie, and now it seems like we’re about to get our wish—but not quite how we expected it. Last week, we found out that Ewan McGregor had recorded audio clips of some of his most iconic lines from The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, and Revenge of the Sith to be used in the animated film Star Wars: The Clone Wars – The Lost Missions.
What does Darth Vader have to do with this?
Darth Vader, a character we first meet in A New Hope, has been a force of evil throughout the course of Star Wars. He’s massacred billions and directly caused the death of our hero, Luke Skywalker’s father. And yet, as vile as he can be on the outside – that’s how we need to see him from now on. Why? Because Darth Vader has some secrets.
A look at the original series…
As any Star Wars fan knows, the prequel trilogy of Episodes I, II, and III aren’t very well received. They are criticized not only for the quality of their scripts but also for their hammy acting by people like Hayden Christensen and Liam Neeson. To be fair, a lot of the scripts in these films were hastily written because Lucas wanted to get back to telling stories about the original trio (Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, and Han Solo). But there’s one other character who had all this happen around him: Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Unfortunately at the end of Episode III, we’re led to believe that Darth Vader kills Obi-wan after knocking him off a cliff on Mustafar. The old Jedi Knight dies by falling into the depths below but still manages to make a final inspirational speech. If you strike me down now, he says, I will become more powerful than you could possibly imagine. Fans have been clamoring for years for an Obi-Wan movie so they can see what happens next. The Clone Wars TV show briefly alluded to his life after Episode III with some bits of dialogue here and there. It would be amazing if Disney could bring back Ewan McGregor or James Arnold Taylor to voice act as Obi-Wan in his later years. And what better way than just as a simple animated short? Sure it would take up less screen time than a whole film, but it would give fans what they want without hurting the story arc too much.
Lucas may love Ewan McGregor, but he doesn’t seem too keen on him having his own movie
Despite being one of the best actors to play a Jedi in the Star Wars prequels, Ewan McGregor hasn’t found himself reprising his role in any way. But it doesn’t seem like he minds too much. He’s got plenty of other projects on his plate, and being one of the most sought-after talents in Hollywood means he gets offered many different types of roles. In fact, he’s set to play Supreme Court Justice Arthur Goldberg alongside Michael Douglas in The Infiltrator.
What if it were a television show instead of a movie?
A potential ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi TV show might be a better idea than any of the rumored movie plotlines. It would provide a well-established protagonist and would allow the series to be set in various time periods (especially because we know from Star Wars: The Clone Wars that Obi-Won can die and still come back to life). Here are six reasons why:
1) There could be more than one villain. Padme may not have been killed when she dies of childbirth if we find out that they survived as hinted by Darth Vader’s words before he throws her down a reactor shaft at the end of Revenge of the Sith, or if her child also survived – for example by turning into Darth Bane.
Could Disney turn this into its next billion-dollar franchise?
Disney’s newest acquisition, Lucasfilm, has a wealth of new material and projects to explore. One idea the internet has rallied around is a stand-alone Obi-Wan Kenobi movie. While it might seem unlikely, Disney has already made their first spinoff in the Marvel Universe with Guardians of the Galaxy. They could easily do the same with Star Wars to introduce audiences to key characters from the era before Luke Skywalker’s story began. Other reports have suggested that Ewan McGregor will be brought back for at least one role in Star Wars: Episode VII, though there is no word yet on which character he will play or when he would appear.
